Follow these procedures to prepare your script and graphics for the daily Logan Live! show.
Make sure you have set up Google Backup and Sync and have a “MyLoganLive” folder within your Google Drive EMP folder on your computer. Save all of your files in your MyLoganLive folder.
Weather Graphics
Download Template and Reference Files
To create your graphics you need to download two files. First, click on this Weather-Graphics-MONITOR.psd link and it should open in a new browser tab.
Click on the DOWNLOAD ICON.
If you have set-up Chrome correctly, you will be be able to choose where to download the file. (If you have not set-up your computer correctly the file will be saved in your Downloads folder and you will have to move it into your MyLoganLive folder.)
Navigate to your computer’s My Logan Live folder within your Google Drive EMP folder then press the [Save] button to download the file.
Repeat the process for the second file. Click on the radar-capture-guide.jpg link to open it in a new browser tab.
Click on the DOWNLOAD ICON and save it to your My Logan Live folder.
Get Weather Data
The first step toward creating graphics for the Logan Live weather segment is to get the forecast and current conditions.
Open a web browser and click on this Union City Weather link to go to the Weather.gov website’s Union City conditions. You will use the current conditions and forecast information to create your graphics.
Create Your Graphics
In your My Logan Live folder, open the Weather-Graphics-MONITOR.psd file with Photoshop.
Make sure Photoshop is set-up correctly. Open the “Window” menu and make sure a check mark is next to the “Essentials (Default)” layout. Click “Reset Essentials” to make sure the workspace layout is correct.
Make the “Layers” palette visible. If the group contents are not visible, click the triangle next to the “Current Temp” layer group to open it. Make sure there are no “eyeballs” next to Conditions, Monday or Friday.
With theWeather-Graphics-MONITOR.psd file open, use the File menu Save As option to save a copy of the template.
In the Save As box use this format for the file name: YYMMDD-weather.psd
Replace YY with the two-digit year; MM with the two-digit month, and DD with the two-digit day. Make sure you keep the .psd extension. For example, if today is December 7, 2019, the copy of the template will be named
191207-weather.psd
Current Conditions
Select the “Text” tool and click on the “00”F” layer.
Refer to the Current Conditions on the Union City Weather website and type the current Fahrenheit temperature.
In the “Layers Palette” click on the “00”C” layer to select it.
Refer to the Current Conditions on the Union City Weather website and type the current Celsius temperature.
Save your file using the Command+S keys. Open the “File” menu and click on the “Save As…” button.
Make sure you are in your “MyLoganLive” folder. Select the “JPEG” format. In the “Save As:” field add -C following weather in the name while keeping the .jpg extension. The “C” indicates this is the current temperature.
In this example the name is: 191207-weather-C.jpg
Click on the “Save” button. When the “JPEG Options” window opens, set the “Quality” to “Maximum” then click on the “OK” button to save the image file.
Forecast
To create the forecast graphic, change the “Layers” visibility as follows:
Click the “eyeball” next to the “Conditions” layer group to make sure it is visible. Make sure the triangle is pointing down so all of the layers in the group are visible.
Click the “eyeball” next to the layer group for the day of the week you are creating the weather graphics for to make sure it is visible. In this example is it Monday.
Click the “eyeball” next to the “Current Temp” layer group to make sure it is off.
Refer to the Forecast Conditions on the Union City Weather website and choose a conditions icon for the first day of your forecast. In this example it is the “Sunny” layer.
Use the “Move” tool to position the icon over the first day of your forecast.
If you need to use a forecast icon more than once, follow these directions: In the “Layers Palette” select the icon layer. In this example it is the “Sunny” layer.
Click the [Command+J] keys to duplicate the layer.
Use the move tool to position the copy on the appropriate day.
Repeat the process each time you need a copy of a conditions icon. Make sure each day has a conditions icon in place.
Once you have a conditions icon in place for each day of the week, turn off visibility for each icon you are not using by clicking on the “eyeball” next to the layer’s name.
Click the triangle next to the “Conditions Layer Group” name” to collapse the group. Expand the day of the week layer group you are creating graphics for by clicking the triangle next to its name. Click the triangle next to the “Highs” layer group to make it expand. Make sure the group and all of its layers are visible.
Use the “Text” tool and click on the bottom “00” layer to select it. Enter the forecast high from the Union City Weather website.
Repeat the process for each “Highs” temperature layer.
Once all of the high temperatures have been entered, collapse the “Highs” layer group. Expand the “Lows” layer group and enter the lows from the Union City Weather website using the same process you did to enter the highs.
Double-check your high and low forecast temperatures.
When you are sure they are correct, save your file using the Command+S keys. Open the “File” menu and click on the “Save As…” button. Make sure you are in your “Logan Live Weather” folder. Select the “JPEG” format. In the “Save As:” field add -F following weather in the name while keeping the .jpg extension. The “F” indicates this is the forecast. In this example the name is:

Click on the “Save” button. When the “JPEG Options” window opens, set the “Quality” to “Maximum” then click on the “OK” button to save the image file.
Start the Radar Animation
On the Union City Weather website scroll down to the “Radar & Satellite Images” and click on the image on the left.
With the map displayed, turn off the Highways, Cities, Warnings and Legend displays by unchecking the boxes next to their names.
Under “Long Range Images” on the left-hand side of the page click on the “Loop” button to start the animation.
If the animation does not start because “Adobe Flash Player is blocked” look to the top right of the browser address bar and click on the small icon.
When you see “Flash was blocked on this page” click on the [Manage] button.
Click the slide switch next to “Block sites from running Flash (recommended)” until it changes to “Ask First.”
Return to the radar tab and click on the “Click to enable Adobe Flash Player” prompt.
When warned “radar.weather.gov wants to run Run Flash” click on the [allow] button to start the animation.
Record the Radar Animation
Go to your Finder Navigate to your “Logan Live Weather” folder and select the “radar-capture-guide.jpg” file.
Press the “spacebar” to display the image. Click on your browser radar tab and drag the radar-capture-guide so it does not cover any part of the animation.
Open QuickTime Player. Use the “File” menu and click on the “New Screen Recording” button.
Click on the “Screen Recording” red button.
Click and drag a rectangle over the “radar-capture-guide.jpg” image so that the corners are at the tips of the large arrows.
Drag the QuickTime recording rectangle you created over the animated map so that Union City is in the center. Click the “Start Recording” button then immediately move your cursor away from the map.
After 15 seconds, stop the recording and click the small “Quit QuickTime Player” button in the upper right of your desktop.
Open the QuickTime “File” menu and click the “Save” option.
When asked to save the movie, navigate to your “Logan Live Weather” folder. Save the file with a name using this format: “YYMMDD-weather-radar.mov” Use 2-digit numbers for the year (YY), month (MM) and day (DD). In this example the name is 191207-weather-radar.mov
From your “Logan Live Weather” folder send the three files you created to the control room following these instructions.
Once you have sent the files, go to the control room and confirm with the video switcher that the files have been received.
Weather Teleprompter Script
Download the Template
If you have not already done so, click on this 00-WEATHER-Template-COLOR.rtf link. It should open in a new browser tab.
Click on the DOWNLOAD ICON.
Navigate to your computer’s My Logan Live folder within your Google Drive EMP folder. Make sure the Format is rich text (RTF) then press the [Save] button to download the file.
You will use a copy of this file to create your script for the daily show.
Make a Copy of the Template
In your computer’s My Logan Live folder, double-click
your copy of the 00-WEATHER-Template-COLOR.rtf file to open it.
If the file does not open with TextEdit, close whatever program it opens, then select the file in your My Logan Live folder.
Press and hold the [Command+i] keys on your keyboard.
In the Info dialog box, look for Open with and select TextEdit from the menu.
Click the [Change All] button.
In the window that opens click the [Continue] button, then close the Info window.
Now when you double-click your copy of the 00-WEATHER-Template-COLOR.rtf file it should open in TextEdit.
With a copy of the template open, open the TextEdit File menu and click on Duplicate.
This will make a copy of the file.
Return to the File menu and click Save.
In the Save As box, replace the zeros with the show date, using this format YYMMDD, and eliminate -Template-COLOR from the name. For example, if today is December 21, 2019, your weather script file will be named
191221-weather.rtf
Make sure the name of your script always starts with the date in the proper format, and ends with the .rtf extension. When you are done naming the file, click the [Save] button.
Type Your Script
If you are planning to ad lib what you say during the weather segment you still need to prepare a basic script.
Replace NAME and [Name} with your name and save the file.
If you wish to write exactly what you want to say, delete (AD LIB) and type your script. (Refer to the Union City Weather website for forecast details.)
When your script is complete save it.
Open a browser window in Chrome and navigate to the LL-Prompter folder.
From your computer’s My Logan Live folder, drag today’s prompter script into the LL-Prompter folder.
Once the file has uploaded, confirm with the prompter operator that they have your file.
Print Your Script and Practice
If you have written a script of what you will say during the Weather Segment, and you have confirmed that the prompter operator has receive your script, use TextEdit to open the file in your My Logan Live folder.
With the file open, use the Format menu to Make Plain Text.
When asked to “Convert this document to plain text?” click the [OK] button.
With the plain text version of your script open, use the File menu to
a copy for you.
Go to the studio and practice reading your script while you wait for the show rehearsal to start. You will need your script during the rehearsal and show in case the prompter stops working.
