The overall look of your WordPress.com website is determined by themes.
To choose a website theme, scroll down the left side of your “Dashboard” page, float over [Appearance], then click on the [Themes] link.
Your site’s current theme appears in the top-left corner of those displayed. It is labeled “Active” because it is in use by your website.
Click on the [free] button on the right-hand side of the screen. This will make sure you only see themes that will not cost you money to use.
In the “Search themes …” box type “responsive.”
This will limit the themes displayed to those that work well on desktop, tablet and phone screens. Non-responsive themes may be hard for people to use on mobile devices, so choosing a responsive theme is best.
You may narrow your theme search further by adding another term to the “Search themes …” box, such as “responsive portfolio.”
Scroll through the themes and float over one you might want to use for your website. To see how your site will look, click on the [Preview] button.
If you decide to use the theme for your site, click on the [Save & Activate] button. If you decide to look for another theme, click the “X” button to the left of the [Save & Activate] button.
If you do not activate the theme you have previewed, repeat the process until you have found the look that will best represent you.
One thing to consider when choosing a theme is the “header” size. The header is the part of your theme that appears at the top of each page. A header is a great way to establish your personal brand. However, if the header takes up more than 1/3 of the page, it can make it difficult for people to find things on your site. Make sure whatever theme you choose does not feature a large header image.
